Oversight & Insight for Sacramento's Senior Population and Dependent Adults
Like other regions in California, Sacramento is home to a growing population of older adults and dependent adults. It is the mandate of the Sacramento County Adult and Aging Commission to monitor services available to these populations and to advise the County Board of Supervisors. The Commission is comprised of volunteers who meet monthly in a general session, and in smaller committees that handle specific items of business. All meetings are open to the public.
Commissioners are appointed by the County's elected Board of Supervisors. Members of the Commission come from all segments of the community and represent the broad spectrum of diversity that characterizes Sacramento County. Our Website contains scores of links that families and individuals will find helpful.
The AAC Website allows the public to understand the Commission's duties, governing principles and mandated goals. Documents relating to Commission business throughout the year are readily available and archives of past Commission activities are also cataloged here. Information about special meetings and schedules are also available online, as are application forms for individuals wishing to serve on the Sacramento County Adult and Aging Commission.
According to a 2009 study by the Area 4 Agency on Aging, the Sacramento region is facing unprecedented growth in the number of people over the age of 65. In fact, the Baby Boomer population will be the nation's largest population of seniors in history. The A4AA Report points out that by 2040, there will be 800,000 people over 60 living in Sacramento County and surrounding counties.
As people are living longer and healthier than ever before, organizations that serve older and dependent adults will need to expanded services. It also means that current, critical services must be sustained so that future efforts can build upon firm foundations.
The Sacramento Adult and Aging Commission tracks aging trends, monitors services and listens to input from providers of services and from the public. The Commission presents elected officials with detailed information about resources and needs that can help guide County decision makers in matters concerning older and dependent adults.
Residents of the Sacramento area are encouraged to attend AAC meetings and to apply to open positions on the Commission.
